Families play an important role in creating safe schools. Your voice and commitment to a safe learning environment for the young people in your life are crucial in helping our schools become even safer places for students to learn and grow.

The Safe School Certification Program is designed to deal with bullying and harassment that may be occurring in our schools and to help staff follow policies and procedures with diligence, in particular, Iowa’s Safe Schools Law, passed on September 1, 2007 (Iowa Code § 280.28). The law states that “Iowa is committed to providing all students with a safe and civil school environment in which all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect.”

We  encourage you to ask your school to become certified. Schools that apply and admitted will get access to an innovative program that is helping schools realize the necessary steps needed to make their school one of the safest in the nation. The program is fee-free, incentive based and completely voluntary. Schools get: one-on-one, year-round support from staff, tools for school safety and the prestige of becoming safe school certified. Certification is also peace of mind. Inquiring about certification with school staff is a step in helping your school become a safer more welcoming place.

We also encourage you to:

  • Make sure you understand Iowa’s Safe Schools Law and amended Iowa Civil Rights Act.
  • Make sure you and your student know where your school keeps its bullying and harassment report forms and make sure they fill out this form with the school equity officer and/or school administrators when incidents of bullying or harassment or occur.
  • Stay actively involved with the school and ask questions.
  • Stay up-to-date on this program: fill out our interest form which will keep you informed through our Email Newsletter (click here).
